Car Seat Guidelines

Obviously car seats have nothing to do with this blog but I think this information is so important I am listing it here. Here are the new car seat guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics which encourage rear-facing until at least age
2 ("children under age 2 are 75 percent less likely to die or be severely injured in a crash if they are riding rear-facing"). These suggestions have been around for a while, but it hasn't been well known by the general public. I only find out about them when I was researching a new car seat when Joshua was about to turn 1. If you want more information there are piles of it in the babycenter community under the car seat questions board. Here's a link. I'm not sure if it works if you are not yet a member of babycenter.

Sorry for the soap box. I have seen and heard of far too many kids injured or killed from improper car seat use. It isn't worth it.

FYI, there are some great car seats out there for extended rear-facing. The link above to babycenter lists some. The key is to find a car seat that your child will not outgrow in weight OR height and that allows you to rear-face for an extended period of time. I have the first years true fit. We love it, even more than the more expensive Britax. It is more roomy and more comfy (in my opinion) than the britax, but it does weight more and has a larger profile.

I found a pictures of Joshua in his true fit when he was almost 2.5 years old. He was very tall for his age and still isn't too squashed :)
