Before my son Jacob was born I looked into getting another audio baby monitor. Last time I bought one I got whatever looked good at Babies RUs. Let me tell you, that was not the best decision I have ever made. Not only was the monitor full of static, but my neighbor informed me, while chuckling, that she could hear my son talking to himself while playing in his room. I was not nearly as amused as her about the situation. In fact, I was
horrified. It's not like I yell or say crazy things while in ear shot of the monitor (I only do that when out of earshot), but I like my privacy. That is why I live in a house with blinds and solid walls! Oh, and she also commented on how she noticed that my son had moved to a big boy bed because she saw it on her video monitor. Don't get me started on how much that comment freaked me out! Next upgrade will be a new video monitor, that's for sure.
Anyway, moving on. So I decided that I needed a good audio monitor this time that would be nice and private. The Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor was the best one I could find out there. I found a couple that looked somewhat comparable, but the reviews on them were mixed--that was not what I was looking for. I did not want to spend $50-100 on something that turned out to be a lemon. So far the new Philips Avent baby monitor has been great and I'm so glad I bought it. It was pricey and I almost didn't buy it at first, but a quick thought back to my conversation with my neighbor above changed my mind :)
Some Pros:
No Interference with electronics or neighbors
Back up battery in case the power goes out
Super long lasting rechargeable battery on parent unit
Clear Sounds
Great distance coverage
Sound level lights so you can see but not hear baby if needed
Some Cons:
Sound on parent unit is not loud enough in my opinion (although it goes plenty quiet)
Pricey
