Habits

Many people expect healthy sleep habits to form automatically. This is rarely the case. Parents have a lot to do with the development of healthy sleep habits and unfortunately often end up hindering them.

"It is easier to teach good habits first than it is to correct bad habits later" (Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, p. 12). Sleep habits also are a lot easier to form than break, generally get harder to break the
older your baby gets or the longer he's been holding onto the habit and rarely just go away on their own (Sleeping Through The Night, Ferber). This is why it is important to try to prevent unwanted habits before they start (see Accidental Parenting).

Also, habits often form, persist and are reinforced because appropriate limits in parenting are not being set.
